No Longer a Slumdog by K. P. Yohannan

The nation of India is full of children who will never know anything other than poverty. They were born into the Hindu caste system, beneath the lowest caste. They are less than human, untouchable, unwanted. They are forced to work in fields and factories so they might be able to eat one meal each day. Many are kidnapped or sold into child labor or sex trafficking. These are the slumdogs, living in the slum villages throughout the country. For thousands of years these people, the Dalits and Other Backward Castes, have believed that they deserve this life because of the Hindu beliefs of karma and reincarnation. They barely survive each day, and some don’t. Children die when the resort to eating toxic mud to fill their empty stomachs.

But there is hope! That’s what this book is about. K. P. Yohannan describes the work done through Gospel for Asia’s Bridge of Hope program. Through these centers children all over India have an opportunity to get an education, nutrition, love, support, and most importantly the knowledge of Jesus. In this book, Yohannan share stories of a few of the children who have come to the Bridge of Hope centers. Some of the stories are told in the words of the child, or a parent. The Bridge of Hope program is helping these children break out of a cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and oppression. They are learning that they are precious children of a loving God. The children take this knowledge back to their families and villages and the transformations are incredible! I could go on and on about this book, but you should really read it for yourself because it has the potential to change your heart and your life. Read these words by K. P. Yohannan:

The need is almost overwhelming. The sheer numbers drive us to our knees. But don’t be daunted by the size of the task; you can make a difference in the life of a child… Let’s not let what we can’t do stop us from doing what we can do.

The point? It’s this: sometimes we feel like if we can’t save them all, why bother? Why help one when millions more will still be in danger? But what if everyone thought that way? The children who have been saved by the Bridge of Hope would most likely not be alive, or they would be in bondage as laborers or sex slaves. But you can help one child get out of this life. You can help one child break this horrible cycle. That one child will touch others. The impact of helping that one child has no limits. There are currently tens of thousands of children enrolled in Bridge of Hope centers throughout India. Can you make it one more?

Hateful Christianity?

Why is it that so many non-Christians see Christians as hateful and judgmental? We have to ask ourselves this question. The world of the internet, especially, opens up a large variety of views, but one that seems to be at the forefront is that Christians are hateful. Why is that? My answer may not be easily taken, but I believe it’s the truth: the most vocal people of the Christian world are the people who are hateful and judgmental. There are certain organizations that give all Christians a bad name. I won’t call out anyone in particular. I am not judging them. I don’t know why they act the way they do. I don’t know what causes the hatred they feel. All I know is it is not scriptural. It saddens me that Christians are so hated, not because people hate us, but because it causes them to hate Jesus, hate God, and close their ears and hearts to anything we might have to say.

The problem with organizations like the ones I mentioned above, and the people who share their thinking, is that they tend to focus on one sin as more sinful than others. Sin is sin. Anything that separates us from God is sin. This comes across as hatred of a particular group of people.  Another problem that arises is that instead of sharing the Gospel with love, they spew hatred and judgment. Judgment is not ours to hand out, and Christ called us to love everyone, even our enemies.

Does God hate sin? Yes! Why? Because sin separates us from Him and we were created for fellowship with Him. Does God punish sin? Yes. He forever separates us from Himself and, in the end, we go to Hell. I’m not going to focus on sin and Hell too much here, because this is not a call to the unsaved. It’s a plea to anyone who calls themselves “Christian.”

The Bible does NOT say “Go and tell the world I hate them.” No, the Bible says “And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, ‘Come back to God!’ For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ” (2 Cor 5:18-21). If we are speaking for Christ we need to ask ourselves, would Jesus have said what I am going to say? Continue reading

Song-lyrics Sunday 6/5/11

This week is one of my absolute favorites. Two music legends, Elvis and J.D. Sumner, singing “Why Me, Lord?” which was written by Kris Kristofferson. I think everyone knows Elvis, but if you’re not familiar with J.D. Sumner he is a well-known gospel bass singer. One of the lowest voices ever recorded. Be sure to check out the video to hear the song, and see some pics of the great friends, Elvis and J.D.

Why Me Lord?
What have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I’ve known
Tell me Lord
What did I ever do
To deserve loving you
And the kindness you’ve shown

Lord, Help Me Jesus
I’ve wasted it
So help me Jesus
I know what I am
Now that I know that
I needed you so
Help me Jesus
My soul’s in your hands

Try me Lord
If you think there’s a way
I can ever repay
All I’ve taken from you
Maybe Lord
I can show someone else
What I’ve been through myself
On my way back to you

Lord, Help Me Jesus
I’ve wasted it
So help me Jesus
I know what I am
Now that I know that
I needed you so
Help me Jesus
My soul’s in your hands

Jesus
My soul’s in your hands

Little Girls of India

God must want me focused on this issue because things keep coming up. I read an article on Yahoo today about the treatment of girls in India. The horrible treatment of girls and women in this culture is nothing new to me, but my heart breaks whenever I hear or read about it. I feel like I should be doing something! I should be able to help! This is part of the reason I support Gospel for Asia. They work throughout all of Asia (doing a lot of work in India), bringing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who may never get to hear it otherwise. I believe this is a large part of the solution. Contrary to popular feminist belief, the Bible does not make a woman a slave of her husband. When God made Eve he didn’t take a bone from Adam’s foot so that Eve would be under him. Nor did He take the rib from Adam’s back so that Eve would be behind him. God took the rib from Adam’s side, for Eve to be Adam’s partner and mate. It’s sort of cliche now, but it’s true nonetheless. The Gospel of Jesus Christ brings a woman up where she belongs. So, it’s an important step to helping these women and young girls who are so hated and neglected. These women must know that even if their earthly fathers neglect them, there is a Father in Heaven who loves them more than anything. They must know that even if their earthly fathers don’t care whether they live or die in this life, they have a Heavenly Father who cares whether they live or die both in this life and especialy in the afterlife.

So, I’m going to ask a favor of you now. Please consider donating, even if it’s only this one time (even if it’s only $5), to Gospel for Asia. If you go to their Major Ministries page, the last two options on the page are “Women’s Literacy Program” and “Womens Ministry.” Both of these are so important to these young girls being neglected to death. And pray. Prayer is so important.

Here are a couple of quotes from the Yahoo article:

The starving girls in this hospital ward include a 21-month-old with arms and legs the size of twigs and an emaciated 1-year-old with huge, vacant eyes. Without urgent medical care, most will not live to see their next birthday.

“If a woman has a boy, for a month she will be looked after. If she has a girl, she’ll be back in the fields in three days,” says Sudha Misra, a local social worker.

A 2007 study by the rights group ActionAid India found that gender ratios were worse in urban areas, and that sex-selective abortions were more common among wealthier and higher-caste people who could afford ways to learn the gender of fetuses.

Song-lyrics Sunday 4/24/11

And it is also Easter Sunday! Resurrection day! He is risen!!! So today’s song is:

The Champion by Carman (Make sure you check out the video at the end of this post. I found it on YouTube. It not only has the lyrics, but it is laced with images that bring the real story to the forefront.)

In the vast expanse of a timeless place,
Where silence ruled the outer space,
Ominously towering, it stood,
The symbol of a spirit war
Between the one name Lucifer,
And the Morning Star, the ultimate of good.

Enveloped by a trillion planets,
Clean as lightning and hard as granite,
A cosmic coliseum would host the end
Of the war between the lord of sin and death,
And the Omnipotent Creator of man’s first breath,
Who will decide who forever will be the Champion.

The audience for the ‘Fight of the Ages’ was assembled and in place.
The angels came in splendor from a star.
The saints that had gone before were there: Jeremiah, Enoch, Job.
They were singing the “Song of Zion” on David’s harp.

The demons arrived, offensive and vile, cursing and blaspheming God.
Followed by their ‘trophies’ dead and gone.
Hitler, Napoleon, Pharaoh, Capone,
Tormented and vexed and grieved.
Waiting for their judgment from the Throne.

Then a chill swept through the mammoth crowd
and the demons squealed with glee,
as a sordid, vulgar, repulsive essence was felt.
Arrogantly prancing, hands held high, draped in a sparkling shroud
Trolled by demons, Satan ascended from Hell.

Then Satan cringed, the sinners groaned!
The demons reeled in pain as a swell of power like silent thunder rolled
With a surge of light beyond intense, illuminating the universe,
In resplendent glory appeared the Son of God.

Then a Persona, yes, Extraordinaire appeared in center ring.
God the Father will oversee the duel.
Opening the Book of Life, each grandstand hushed in awe as
majestically He said,
“Now here’s the rules. You’ll be wounded for their transgressions,
bruised for iniquities”
When He said, “By His stripes they’re healed,” the devil shook!
He screamed, “Sickness is my specialty. I hate that healing junk!”
God said, “You shut your face, I wrote the book!”
Then the Father looked at His only Son and said,
“You know the rules.
Your blood will cleanse their sins and calm their fears.”
Then He pointed His finger at Satan and said,
“And I know you know the rules.
You’ve been twisting them to deceive My people for years.”
Satan cried, “I’ll kill you Christ! You’ll never win this fight!”
The demons wheezed, “That’s right, there ain’t no way.”
Satan jeered, “You’re dead meat, Jesus, I’m gonna bust you up tonight!”
Jesus said, “Go ahead, make my day!”

The bell, the crowd, the fight was on,
And the devil leaped in fury.
With all his evil tricks he came undone.
He threw his jabs of hate and lust.
A stab of pride and envy,
but the hand that knew no sin blocked every one.

Forty days and nights they fought, and Satan couldn’t touch Him.
Now the final blow saved for the final round.
Prophetically Christ’s hands came down
And Satan struck in vengeance!
The blow of death felled Jesus to the ground.

The devils roared in victory!
The saints shocked and perplexed
as wounds appeared upon His hands and feet.
Then Satan kicked Him in His side, and blood and water flowed.
And they waited for the 10 count of defeat.

God the Father turned His head,
His tears announcing Christ was dead!
The 10 count would proclaim the battle’s end.

Then Satan trembled through his sweat in unexpected horror, yet…
As God started the count by saying,
“…10…”
“Hey wait a minute, God…”
“…9…”
“Stop! You’re counting wrong…”
“…8…”
His eyes are moving…
“…7…”
His fingers are twitching…
“…6…”
“Where’s all this Light coming from?”
“…5…”
“He’s alive!”
“…4…”
“Oh – nooooo!”
“…3…”
Oh yes!,
“…2…”
HE HAS…
“…1…”
He has won!
He has won!
He’s alive forevermore!
He is risen, He is Lord,
He has won!
He has won!
He’s alive forevermore,
He is risen!
He is Lord!

Proclaim the news in every tongue,
Through endless ages and beyond!
Let it be voiced from mountains loud and strong!
Captivity has been set free, salvation bought for you and me,
‘Cause Satan is defeated,
And Jesus is The Champion!
